Prescription Medications |
|
Most common prescription medications Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are widely used in dogs. Also called NSAIDS they are in the category of pain relief medications. Some examples are Rimadyl®, Etogesic®, Zubrin®, and less know but very effective Metacam®. They are proven to be effective for minor discomfort caused by trauma or sprain, for older dogs suffering from arthritis, for hip-dysplasia, post-operatively for surgical patients, and other cases where inflammation and pain are present. Prednisone is the most widely used steroid for suppression of inflammatory and allergic disorders. Since it is a steroid it has side effects and its used should excess 2 to 3 weeks, or if longer periods are necessary as prescribed by the veterinarian. Phenylpropanolamine is used for urinary incontinence. Eye discharges are contagious and we can end up with all the dogs suffering from this problem. Use of Gentamicin Sulfate helps control the spread of the problem. Reglan® is used for nausea, vomiting, and heartburn by stimulating stomach movements which allows the emptying of the stomach. Cimetidine is commonly used in humans for ulcers. It is also used in dogs for the purpose. Cephalexin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and very popular to treat most gram positive bacterial infections and some gram negative ones. |
