I will do just about anything for my humans; that comes with the fact that I am the smartest of the bunch, but this smartness has caused me some problems. Of course this was nothing I couldn't solve with my beautiful eyes and tender attitude. I overcame a terrible chewing problem after my humans gave me a little brother to play with. We can talk about him later but for now let’s continue with my story. I am a survivor of heartworm disease; when I was adopted my humans did not know I had the disease already, so they started heartworm medication and we all went about our business. As a standard procedure, my humans test all adopted animals for heartworm after 6 months of adoption because of the lack of medical history. The diagnostic was not pretty; I was infected and needed treatment! I took those painful injections, was confined for 6 loooong weeks, and could not even go outside by myself. After those long 6 weeks I was tested again and was free of heartworms and healthy again. During my confinement I gained weight even though I didn't eat much. A few months later I looked like a fat tick so mom and dad decided to start some medical tests as a preventative measure. They even suspected I was hypothyroid but nothing showed up. Just like some humans, dogs can inherit genetic problems and mine is to be overweight. Oh well, I am a very happy girl, run a lot and have lots of energy; just cannot loose weight. In November of 2000, mom decided to get me on a controlled diet. It didn’t work. |
